Drying Wood in the Open Air

Drying the wood is one of the main processes which you should do before every work job such as creating a table or cabinets. This is because if the wood becomes wet and you utilize it, it can make some problems after finishing the wood. The problems like resizing reshaping fungus and so on. there are two main ways to dry the wood called putting wood in the open air and using the industrial oven. In this essay, we are going to talk about the former and explain the benefits and drawbacks of drying wood in the open air.

Open air drying

As its name dictates, we put the wood in the open air so that the sun and wind dry it. The heat and wind remove the water inside of the wood after a long time. The main point of this strategy is that we have to put the wood in a place that possesses a good way for wind and the heat of the sun.

Position

The main point of this strategy is the position of the wood. This means that we have to put the wood in a place that possesses a good way for wind and the heat of the sun. Consequently, this can help the wood to be dried quickly. Also, we must pay more attention to the ray of the sun because if the sun shines directly on the wood, then the wood slab would probably crack. So, it is better to put a roof for it to prevent the direct ray.

The wood should also have distance from the flat and does not touch the ground because in this way some pests like termites and ants can go inside of wood. After this distance, we can collect the wood themselves

Sticks

Another significant phase during drying wood in the open air is putting Sticks between wood so that makes a distance for air circulation. Β The thickness of sticks should be around 20cm and 5 cm in width.

Note

We have to pay more attention to the weight on the wood because when we put the wood slabs on each other’s, the downer slabs have to bear the weight of the upper. But the upper slabs do not any load on themselves. So, we have to put some loads on the top of the wood slaps to make a load balancing.

Advantages and disadvantages

There are some advantages for putting wood slabs in the open air to dry. For example, it is free and does not cost. Also, it would be available for everyone, this means you just need an empty place to collect the wood.

The main disadvantage of this method is time-consuming, which means that you have to put wood slaps in the open air for more than 90 days and even for some wood like oak wood which has more humidity, it might reach 360 days. If the thickness of wood is much, the time of drying is doubled. As a result of this, the wood would possibly take termites and other kinds of problems.

In conclusion

One of the common and easy to dry the wood is by putting them in the open air. Although this way is the affordable way and easy, it takes much time to dry and sometimes can make other problems such as termites and cracking the wood. Therefore, this is not recommended method to dry the wood.
